If you're in the job market, you know that every little edge counts. From your CV to your LinkedIn profile, you want to put your best foot forward and show potential employers that you're the cream of the crop. And one simple way to do that is by having a professional headshot.
But why are professional headshots so important in today's competitive marketplace? Let's take a closer look.
When someone is considering you for a job, their first point of contact is often your online presence - particularly your LinkedIn profile. And what's the first thing they see when they land on your page? That's right, your headshot.
So you want to make sure that your headshot is professional, high quality, and represents the best version of you. A poorly lit, blurry, or unprofessional headshot can give the impression that you're not serious about your career or that you don't care about how you present yourself. On the other hand, a well-done headshot shows that you're a polished and reliable professional.
In a crowded job market, it can be tough to differentiate yourself from the competition. But having a professional headshot can give you an edge. A high-quality headshot shows that you're serious about your career and willing to invest in yourself. It also helps you stand out from the sea of generic, smartphone headshots that so many people use.
When you're applying for a job, you want the person considering you to feel like they can trust you. A professional headshot is a small but powerful way to build that trust. It shows that you're a real person with a real face, rather than just a faceless name on a page. And when someone can put a face to a name, they're more likely to feel a connection with you and be more likely to trust you.
Your headshot is more than just a photo of your face - it's an opportunity to show a little bit of your personality. Are you friendly and approachable? Professional and serious? Creative and unique? Your headshot can help convey these qualities and give potential employers a sense of who you are as a person.
So if you're in the job market and don't have a professional headshot yet, it's time to change that. A little investment in yourself can go a long way in helping you stand out, build trust, and land your dream job. Trust us, it's worth it.

the term bracketing usually refers to exposure bracketing: the photographer chooses to take one picture at a given exposure, one or more brighter, and one or more darker, in order to select the most satisfactory image. Technically, this can be accomplished by changing either the shutter speed or the aperture, or, with digital cameras, the ISO speed, or combinations thereof. Exposure can also be changed by altering the light level, for example using neutral-gray filters or changing the degree of illumination of the subject (e.g. artificial light, flash). Since the aim here is to alter the amount of exposure, but not otherwise the visual effect, exposure compensation for static subjects is typically performed by altering the shutter speed, for as long as this is feasible.
The resulting shoot was undertaken and I'm pleased to say the client was really happy with the results that made their interior look light, airy and full of natural light.

In today’s competitive environment, its essential to represent your business in a way that customers, clients and other professionals will respect and to get them interested in what you have to sell – it makes sense to use a professional interior photographer to create high quality, striking photographs that truly represent your brand
Soak In Style are one of Berkshire premier bathroom designers and installers and understood the need to have their expertise professionally communicated in photography. They wanted the colours of the room, the angles of the structure or the texture of your stones to impress clients. Bathrooms buy their very nature can be awkward shapes with little natural light that can make for dark and shadowy images if not done correctly.
Maintaining you brand quality and consistency across all outlets e.g. print, website, social media etc is key to marketing yourself properly. Showcasing amazing photography of your product is an important factor to achieving this as people have an unconscious association: if the photos are bad = the product is bad/ or the business doesn't care enough to take good photos. Poor quality photos can be a reflection of the business itself.

They had just re-fitted the surgery so wanted to highlight the modern and contemporary style on their website and social media but also to make the staff recognisable and approachable when clients were choosing a dentist:
As you can see the images allow a potential customer to see exactly what the surgery is like plus who will be looking after them, which is really important to the dentist as clients can be nervous.

]]>One this occasion the passion is for motorcycles and in particular for the custom motorcycle made by my client and his son. Its a 1972 Honda that has taken years to finish, from the wreck they started with, to commissioning custom made parts and to the roar of the engine when she started up for the first time.
The custom motorbike is all about the details so it was really important to capture some of the minutest parts of the bike.....thankfully the client was there to point most of them out to me as I'm a complete novice in this area. However, I could not help but be impressed by the knowledge, technical ability and enthusiasm but father and son showed for this bike and I only hope these images did it justice
The headshot is one of the most important marketing weapons in a actors arsenal. But what separates the good from the bad?
For me, the most important criteria in any headshot is honesty, as a casting director will expect to see the person at audition who they see in the headshot so excessive make up, lighting or photoshop tricks will only work against you. Therefore, how a portrait is lit to show the subject in the most flattering way is essential and any post-production work is reductive rather than removal of perceived flaws and imperfections. All the actors used in this blog article attended The Reel Scene acting school in London......if you are an inspiring actor you can get in touch with them here
It is also very important to remember that the Headshot serves a specific function and must not be confused with a glamour, fashion or portrait photograph that you could hang on the wall or give to your parents/ partner as gift. The headshot is about representing you, your age and personality or even specific emotions that are important to the type of roles you are applying for. Its not about looking pretty or wearing the latest clothes so it is often hard for a subject to separate themselves from the function of the headshot. It is therefore very useful to get an objective option about which headshot to use......and this doesn't mean asking your mum or girlfriend as they will be undoubtably bias. I would suggest to speaking to others in the industry, so perhaps, an acting coach, casting agent, colleagues or even the headshot photographer as they are best placed to give an honest and objective opinion that is key to success and gain more auditions.
As with on-camera acting, the headshot is all about the eyes and this is where the knowledge and technique of your photographer comes in. The eyes need to be tack sharp, in focus and portraying energy, vitality and passion not dull and lifeless. This is where your acting skill comes in as you may need to portray inner thoughts like pain or anger implying a back story.
If you are reading this then I think its safe to assume you are an aspiring or working actor and understand the importance of a professional headshot in the progression of your career. However, the range of options out there can be bewildering - should you go for an outdoor headshot or is a studio portrait the way forward, do I need a simple smile or express emotion in the headshot, how many changes of clothes do I need, what style is going to get me noticed?
All of these questions are valid and, to be honest, there are no correct answers but its essential to have a direct conversation with your headshot photographer so they can understand your specific requirements and create a session around it.
If you are interested in having this conversation about your headshot and what could potential work best for you, then please don't hesitate to get in touch

Its been busy summer of wedding photography in Berkshire this year. I've even made it out to Hampshire to shoot a wedding at Tylney Hall which is a beautiful venue dating back to the 16th century and offers couples a wonderful location for their special day.
As a wedding photographer its always great to find new and exciting venues that offer a really stunning range of locations for the couple and Tylney Hall certain does this in spades. From 'the getting ready', ceremony, reception and breakfast we were able to get some lovely images of the day and I'd like to thanks Pam & Andy for being amazing clients and throwing themselves into the photography.

As a commercial headshot photographer in Berkshire its always great to great to work with other start ups/ entrepreneurs in the local area. I've successfully worked with Centrica for a few years now and they run program called 'Ignite' whose aim is to provide funding and business assistance for social entrepreneurs in the energy sector. This is Ignite's second year of finding companies to assist and last week I was invited to their Growth Accelerator event at Royal Holloway to provide headshot photography of each of the entrants for marketing and online purposes
With my mobile light set up I was able to produce the following headshot photographs for Ignite. The shoot lasted about 90 minutes and we created headshots for the 9 different companies who were enrolled in the growth accelerator programme.
I think this event only proves the fact that companies of all sizes, ranging from new start ups to well established businesses need to have quality imagery to enhance their online presence and for traditional marketing activities. That is why Centrica, one of the UK's largest Blue Chip companies, felt it was important to provide these entrepreneurs with good imagery as part of the business support package offered in the Ignite growth accelerator programme.

As a professional wedding photographer in Berkshire its always fun to photograph a couples special day at a venue that I've not shot at in the past. Although I've done many locations across Berkshire, The Compleat Angler in Marlow was a fresh challenge for me, so a week or so before the wedding day I went into Marlow to scout out a few locations in and around the hotel.
Due to the wedding being in England in July, you can never guarantee a dry wedding day, so I found potential shoot locations for both wet and dry scenarios should the skies decide to open on their big day!
On the day of the wedding itself we were very lucky with the weather, as it only rained when I was photographing inside. When I took the couple on a 20 minute walk around the hotel and church for their portrait session, it thankfully stayed completely dry, and we were able to get the following photographs.
It just goes to highlight the importance of planning and preparation in wedding photography as you can never guarantee everything will go as you'd like it 'on the day'. But by planning for as many eventualities as possible you can help with the smooth running of the day and give the wedding couple photographs that exceed expectations.
Should you need a wedding photographer in Maidenhead, Marlow, Windsor or across Berkshire then please don't hesitate to get in touch

As many fellow professional photographers know, the digital age has presented so many advantages over traditional photography from being able to take 1000's of photographs on a single memory card with instant playback of images to the endless possibilities of Photoshop and Social Media.
However, as with many things in life, this can be a double edge sword and have a darker side. So many images are now shared by photographers, clients and the general public worldwide that its becoming a greater and greater risk that some may decide to steal or 'borrow' your images. That's why protection should be at the forefront of most photographers minds in this digital/ sharing world
As a professional photographer in berkshire I've just released my latest watermark that will now be attached to all imagery.
However, clients need not worry as this is fully removeable (or you will have access to password protected galleries) when you are downloading your images or having prints produced. It simply helps in protecting my work and your images from unauthorised copying or saving.
Please don't hesitate to get in touch with any questions you may have about this

When I discuss this subject with clients, many of them offer the same resistance as to why its taken so long to upload a profile headshot to LinkedIn. Its mainly because they prefer to be invisible or want to ‘protect their privacy’, both of which are completely understandable motive but both counter-productive if you are considering using LinkedIn in a useful or beneficial way. The whole point is to be open and engaging, so not having a good headshot picture really will effect your perception and personal brand - would you research or buy a product from eBay or Amazon without seeing a picture first?
There are many reasons why I think a professional headshot are essential if you choose to engage with LinkedIn (or, to be honest, any form of social media). Just like a business, you are presenting your brand online and your headshot is your personal logo so it needs to look professional, approachable and credible. It has been shown that LinkedIn entries are 7 times more likely to be clicked on with a photo beside it and recruiters, in particular, will not click on profile without headshot due to the likelihood of it being a spam entry. I think its also fair to say that most professional jobs these days need an understanding/ skill with social media so having a consistent, visible and strong personal presence across any platform you engage with (twitter, Facebook etc) is essential as a company or recruiter will research you on all of them.
So, what makes a successful Linked Headshot? Obviously styles and preferences change but the most important (and this is actually in the User Agreement) thing to LinkedIn is that it needs to be “recognisably you”. Another one of the classic errors is to take a Facebook image from ‘down the pub’ or taken with your pet/ child, as these do not add to your professional brand (even if they are lovely images) and distract from profile
Personally, I think the days of professional studio heashots are gone as they are obviously staged, posed and unnatural. My style is to take environment heashots using natural light as much as possible so these tend to take place at your office or outside as it offers a more relaxed, engaging, approachable and credible image across all types of employment or industry sector.
Please don't hesitate to get in touch with any questions or is you'd like to book a session

Its been such a busy year so far that my personal project for 2015, to get out there and do more street photography, had taken a bit of a back seat. I'm certainly not complaining because as a professional photographer, you have to go where the paid work is first and personal projects must wait their turn. However, yesterday I had the opportunity to head into a very sunny London and rectify this....
Luminous Photography is a commercial photographer in Berkshire
The two photographs above were my favourite from the day! I especially like 'The Three Ages of Man' image with the young, fit girl running for a bus on the left who is catching up to the middle aged businessman, who in turn, is about to pass the older, slower, slightly shabby gentleman closest to the camera. It just seems to fit the theme of the 'cycle of life' pretty well....although I know its not quite up to Titian masterpiece ;-)
The 'OK Google....where am I?" picture just made me laugh when taking it and I think it works quite well as a street photography image. This is also a good example of an image that I saw in my minds eye before taking it, although it did require luck and a lot of waiting around for the correct person to come along and stand in the right place!

Daniels Patisserie was been a Windsor institution for years and this week saw a major overhaul of the venue and menu. You can now see all the delicious pastries, cakes, sandwiches, pizza, salads etc being freshly made on-site by amazing chefs but it's the new design/ brand that you really notice. Heidi has worked at the patisserie for many years and Daniels have now made her the focal point which really adds to the authenticity and heritage of the brand.

As a professional photographer based in Berkshire, I'm often asked what is the hardest form of photography you are involved in? I've tried my hand at many styles ranging form food photography, wildlife photography to wedding photography and my honest answer would have to be trying to get natural, honest and relaxed photographs of kids!
I'm sure any parent out there has found the same issues - you want to catch the perfect moment when the kids are outside playing and laughing, the lighting is awesome and you see the perfect composition in you minds eye. However, as soon as the camera come out, the kids smiles stiffen up, they stop all the natural interaction and those expressions that you love in your kids disappear immediately
The most important factor is not experience or having the 'right kit' or 'latest lens' but to not give up! Always have a camera with you, keep shooting and the images will come. Its easy to get discouraged (and it happens to all of us) but when you do capture that one image that encapsulates your child, it will be worth all the hard work.

We all know first impressions have always mattered, but in the past that would usually occur in person, perhaps with a handshake. However, the world has moved on (or to be more accurate, online) and people are more likely to have researched you via your website, Google, LinkedIn before you’ve even had a chance to test the grip of their handshake. This means that the impression you provide online could not be more important or relevant to the perception of you or your business......so Corporate Headshot Photography can be an essential tool in achieving this
![]() |
![]() |
Therefore, a carefully chosen headshot that reflects you or your business is of vital importance. Whether you are a Lawyer, Marketeer, Accountant or Web Designer your headshot should set the tone for who you are and what you are about. It is essential that you understand what impression you are trying to generate from the corporate headshot e.g. relaxed, approachable, professional, confident etc as different industries have different requirements - would you want to use a lawyer dressed in t-shirt and shorts, probably not, but a carefully constructed headshot using natural light, perhaps with an open collar, with the subject off centre looking into the lens will create a professional, creditable yet approachable image.
It not just about the individual, companies want to make their websites more engaging, honest and approachable so adding an actual image of the person you will be dealing with, to the "about us" or "contact us" pages, undoubtably creates trust and confidence in their site/ brand.
We supply 3 main types of Corporate headshot, and try to use natural light as much as possible, as it creates the most honest and flattering images.

The days of popping down to your local high street for a family portrait photography shoot in a studio are, in my opinion, over! The reasons for this are many and range from spiralling cost of owning the high street retail space to evolving styles of photography and taste of clients. I for one, am pleased about this as I’ve never been a fan of the rather sterile, forced posed/ smiles that are generally generated in this type of environment. Family portrait photography can be especially difficult as kids are rarely comfortable being told where to stand, not to move, smile on command and generally avoid their natural (and loveable) behaviours. Therefore, its best to embrace the chaos, connections/ relationships between the family members, and most importantly, the fun of family life.
The details are king
For me, family portrait photography really comes alive when you capture the little moments of intimacy between a father and son or when a child is completely focused on an actively they love. It says so much more about the family than simply putting them in front of a white background with studio lights and expecting to recreate something real that will offer the subjects something memorable and that’s captured a magical moment in time!

Its very rare that I have flashes of genius but this week has definitely seen one of them.....the spark of inspiration came out of nowhere whilst in Sainsbury's (and that's a 100% first) to experience the delights of a Fish Finger sandwich. This is meal I've not had in well over a decade since my student days so an upgrade from cheap white bread and tomato ketchup was required
I still used frozen fish fingers (some things just cannot be improved upon!) but got fresh crusty bread, salad and made my own tartare sauce....the recipe for which is sooo simple and can be found below. As this was a decadent lunch, to say the least, I decided to go all in and have a Brooklyn Lager to wash it all down. If you've not come across Brooklyn Lager it can now be found in the UK as its imported from the US and is brewed in the 'Vienna" style (amber-gold in colour and displays a firm malt center supported by a refreshing bitterness and floral hop aroma. Caramel malts show in the finish).
It compliments the Fish Finger Sandwich fantastically.....
Food Photography by Luminous Photography
Tartare Sauce
200ml/7fl oz mayonnaise
3 tbsp capers, drained and chopped
3 tbsp gherkins, drained and chopped
1 small shallot, finely chopped
squeeze of lemon juice
3 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
flaked sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method: Its simplicity itself.....Mix together all of the ingredients in a small bowl and serve straight away or store in the fridge until needed.

There are many benefits to companies having a Google Maps Business View 360° virtual tour of their bar, restaurant, shop or office. You can offer online visitors the opportunity to enhance their user experience on Google business listings by engaging with your location before they actually visit you in the real world - for example if a husband is looking for a romantic meal for his wife, then he can find you in Google Search/ Maps/ Google+ and 'virtually walk though' your establishment to ensure it has the correct aesthetic/ feeling for a romantic evening.
Google Maps Business View also enables you to embed the tour within your own website so should a potential customer find you directly (without searching on Google, perhaps through a recommendation etc) then you can still offer them the ability to 'walk though' your establishment.
Norden Farm, Centre for the Arts in Maidenhead have recently had a tour completed and we're keen to communicate with corporate clients that they can offer meeting rooms and presentation facilities so a Google Maps Business View tour was a perfect fit. As you can see the tour is now embedded directly into their new website and offers potential clients the ability to see the facilities first hand - please feel free to take the tour below:

As Valentines Day is nearly upon us, I thought it was a great opportunity to try my baking skills (which are minimal) and combine it with my photography project. Having not done a great deal of baking in the past, this did provide quite a challenge especially due to the lack of correct equipment - I can highly recommend the correct type of pastry cutter otherwise you'll be hand cutting around a fiddly paper template and sharp knife ;-)
However, they certainly taste better than they look, and I even got some browny points for being romantic from my wife....

Makes approx. 12 Biscuits
Put flour and butter into a food processor and create to fine crumbs. Add sugar and yolks then whizz to a smooth dough. Remove 1/3 of the dough, vanilla to what’s left and pulse. Wrap this dough in cling film and leave at room temperature.
Put the reserved dough back in the processor with the dried raspberries and pulse. If the dough has become too soft, pulse in a few spoonfuls more flour until a similar consistency to the vanilla dough. Put the dough in the fridge, remembering to remove it 30 mins before you need to roll it out.
Thickly roll out the coloured dough between baking parchment. Use a small 3-4cm heart cutter to stamp out hearts. Keep re-rolling and stamping until all the dough is used. Line up hearts on top of each other and press to form a cylinder, taking care to retain the heart shape. Wrap in cling film and freeze for 3 hrs until solid.
When the heart dough is hard, roll the vanilla dough, using your hands, into 3 cylinders the length of the heart stack. Stick one to each ‘side’ of the hearts, pat together to form a fat cylinder, then gently roll on your work surface until it completely encircles the coloured dough, with the frozen heart dough hidden in the centre. Chill for 2 hrs.
Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Use a sharp knife to slice the log into 1cm-thick discs. Place on trays lined with baking parchment, allowing space for spreading, and bake for 20 mins. Cool on wire racks. Will keep for up to 4 days in an airtight container.

As a professional photographer its always a good plan to keep pushing yourself and experimenting with new techniques or styles of the art. It is this that keeps your skills honed and creative ideas fresh, resulting in better images. Therefore, I've set myself a challenge for 2015 to start practising street photography, as its an area that I've never tried before but I've always loved the style of photograph that it produces
A frame within a frame within some frames
As a photographer in Berkshire I decided to head up to London recently to explore the city and see how my first experience would go. I had no real plan, apart from the setting I would try out on my camera, (which I will go into during another blog article) so I just got off the train at Paddington and started wandering. 5 hours and many hundred of images later I was knackered but in love with Street Photography, its such a joy to see the city with no specific image in mind but to simply react to what arose or was happening in front of me. Most of my professional consumer and commercial photography is successful due to planning and the visualisation of what I want to achieve but Street Photography allows a more reactive methodology that I found very refreshing.
I hope you enjoy some of the results

Six local schools from the Maidenhead area took part in the annual Lantern Parade across the town on Saturday night. The theme this year was animals, with each school creating coloured lanterns of its own species ranging from foxes, fish and bears.
It made for an amazing sight when the parade left the Town Hall to start it tour and I was lucky enough to get prime position to photograph the fun
Over 500 lanterns were created for the event by the school kids under the guidance of Same Sky's who were also responsible of the larger (and very impressive) lanterns that could be seen prowling the town. The parade was organised and co-ordinated by Robyn Bunyan from Norden Farm, Centre for the Arts who said "We have been working with a number of primary schools over the last few weeks with the help of Same Sky to create the lanterns and they look amazing, I am overwhelmed because the whole town was awash with lanterns so I want to say thank you to everyone who took part."
As a Photographer in Berkshire I can say, without a doubt, that I've never seen Maidenhead looking so bright and colourful during the festive period......I can't wait for next year already!

What kind of photographs do casting directors and agents actually require?
At the start of your acting/ model career a portfolio book is essential and the amount of options open to you are vast when it come to photography. Many actors starting out will have an wide array of studio photography commissioned in a wide range of poses, clothes, styles etc - this is a common mistake and not required. A more experienced actor will have a bigger portfolio book due to their time in the industry and represents the work done but as a new entrant you cannot be expected to have this.
The most useful pictures you can have done for an agent or casting director as ones that show you in various way including close ups, full length, looking to camera, looking off camera and colour/ black and white.
As a photographer in berkshire, I recently worked with a Alex from The Reel Scene (a school for actors in Maidenhead) to show the type and style of photography that is of most use when sending your portfolio off to agents. Alex's advice was to show a variety of style but to keep it honest and 'the real you' as agents and casting directors will see straight through too much photoshop or post production work.
So you need to be clear to the photographer of exactly what you require - so either get some advice from a professional (e.g. someone like The Reel Scene) or simply look through articles in the press/ internet for ideas of poses, clothing, make up etc. It can be a good idea to practice your poses at home and get a friend to comment on the results or bring example of the type of pose you want to achieve with you to the shoot.
If you are in need for any portfolio photography then please don't hesitate to get in touch

Luminous Photography, a Photographer in Berkshire photographs the first performance of Kipper Snowy Day
I normally don't feel in the least bit Christmasy until about 1pm on Christmas day, but this year, it strangely hit me in November. Now this is nothing to do with the usual influx of Xmas TV ads or songs on the radio (staring way too early, as always, bah humbug 'huh) but I was lucky enough to be invited to photograph the first performance of Kippers Snowy Day at Norden Farm, Centre for the Arts in Maidenhead, Berkshire.
For those of you who don't know (me included) Kipper the Dog was created by children's author and illustrator, Mick Inkpen - who is currently on 35th title and sold more than 8 million books.
The theatre production is all about Kipper and his friend Tiger who go on an adventure in the snow – but can they find their way home?
A magical world of puppets and mischief, filled with original songs and music, this warm-hearted Christmas show is perfect for children and their families suitable for ages 3+ years.
You can find more information about booking here
Created by Slot Machine, the company that brought the hit Christmas showsOne Snowy Night and Miki to Norden Farm. Congratulations to everyone involved as even I was humming the songs on the way home and excited to get the Christmas decorations up ASAP.

Marlow Christmas Lights 2014 with Tom Kerridge
Luminous Photography, a photographer in Berkshire was in Marlow yesterday for a festive commercial shoot and by chance was there to see Marlow come out in force to see the Christmas lights get switched on. The honour was given to local Michelin Star Chef and TV personality, Tom Kerridge who seemed to absolutely love the job (as these photos attest to)
Hundreds, if not thousands came out for the second year the lights to see the lights switched on and we entertained by carol singers and the temptation on late night shopping. It really did feel like Christmas had arrived, and even this miserable photographer found himself humming jingle bells on the way home

Luminous Photography Exhibition - Photographer in Berkshire's Exhibition comes to a close.
The 10th Nov was a sad day for me as it saw the taking down of the first public showing of my creative portfolio at an exhibition at Norden Farm, Centre for the Arts in Maidenhead. As a professional photographer in Berkshire I'm used to show my commercial, portrait and wedding photography to clients who are familiar with my work (which is why they hired me I the first place). However, as I found out, it's a very different experience showing creative work to the general public that I feel is good enough to be exhibited. With out a doubt it the single most intimidating thing I've done since admitting to my friends and family that I was going to being leaving my safe and successful job to pursue photography 100% full time.
The whole experience has been amazing and proof of the saying 'that is good to do things that scare you from time to time' and this certainly fitted the bill. As someone who has never done this before I've had to learn a great deal of technical knowledge outside of the actual photography (although actually selecting which images to show did lead to sleepless nights) such as printing, mounting, framing, positioning etc etc the list goes on!
I did receive fantastic advice from the experienced team at Norden Farm plus the printers and framers that I used to produce my image s so I must thank Dave Essex at One Vision Images and Marvin at Eye Candy Art Group. All gave up a lot of time to help me get the results.
Please see a few images from the show but if you' like to see everything the please click here and get in touch for the password

Berkshire Photographer goes behind the scenes.
As a passionate professional photographer in Berkshire I get many great opportunities to work with clients on creative projects. But sometimes there are other area that I just love to photograph for my own pleasure.....and wildlife is definitely one of them. I recently headed off to Woburn safari park on a behind the scenes invitation which really indulged my passion
Being taken round the park with knowledgeable staff was a real pleasure as was getting some access to the animals that a typical guest would not get was very special indeed.
Obviously getting close to lions, tigers and bears is a very special and humbling experience which hopefully is reflected in some of my pictures from the day.
I hope you enjoy the images and if you like to see more from the day please get in touch

Commercial Photographer in Berkshire invited to capture the making of Puppet for stage show
Some photography jobs are definately more fun than others so the chance to get involved in documenting the 'birth' of children favourite, Kipper the Dog was just too good to pass up. Kipper and friends have been commissioned as stars of a forthcoming stage play for kids that will debut over Christmas this year so it was a great opportunity to see the creativity, skill and sheer hard work that goes into making the puppets come alive. If there is anyone out there who is unaware of Kipper the Dog - he is a character in a series of books for pre-school -age children by British writer Mick Inkpen. The books consist of 34 titles (as of July 2005), which have sold over 8 million copies and have been translated into over 20 languages. The books have also won many awards.

Wedding Photographer in Berkshire
As a wedding photographer in Berkshire I'm lucky to have some amazing clients who have chosen some of the most beautiful venues in the county to get married. Just recently I've had wedding shoots at Cliveden House, The Guildhall in Windsor to name but a few.
In my opinion the best wedding photography is not simply about the images themselves, its about capturing passion to show that everyone has a story and how unique and important this is. It is the job of the photographer to understand the couple and the style of images that they desire in order to produce stunning results that will be cherished forever.
I try to not to follow the formulaic process of traditional wedding photography as I find it stiffles creativity and ends up saying nothing about the couple or how special their day is.
My style is organic and contemporary, using natural light as much as possible to tell stories from special days and relationships to locations and products. In my opinion photography has moved away from simply capturing the presence of a subject to reporting on events and capturing that sense of occasion that is unique and so sought after by clients. My aim is to show the natural spirit of people and recording significant moments as they occur without interrupting or making my presence known to create truthful yet beautiful photographs.

Photographer in Berkshire covers CWN 2014
Whilst at the Centrica Womens Network Event 2014 there was a presentation from The Coxless Crew who are an inspirational group of 4 women who are setting off on to safely row unsupported across the Pacific Ocean, from Long Beach California 8446 miles to Cairns Australia.
The charities that are being rowed for are:
WALKING WITH THE WOUNDED
As more women join the army and take part in frontline duty there is a greater risk for them to be seriously injured. As we are an all female crew, Walking with the Wounded have agreed that all money raised for the charity during the row will be put into a dedicated fund to specifically help our injured servicewomen.
Finding long-term employment is one of the biggest challenges facing wounded servicewomen and men hoping to lead a normal life after severe injury.
Walking with the Wounded help fund the re-training and re-education of these women and men to help with their transition after active duty.

The Bounty is located right next to the Thames at Cockmarsh on the stretch of the river near Bourne end. With an outside terrace that stretches all the way down to the river's edge, it is the perfect place to spend an afternoon or evening whilst enjoying a drink or something to eat from our extensive menu. The Bounty is full of character and a real family pub where eveyone is made to feel truly at home by our friendly and helpful staff.
Despite its location, which is only accessible on foot or by boat The Bounty is a very popular pub with 'locals' who prefer it to other pubs closer to home. It is not possible to get to The Bounty by car but for those coming from further away The Bounty is conveniently located under half a mile from Bourne End train station and just over a mile away from Cookham train station.
The Bounty is a very unique pub which is full of character from top to bottom. They serve a variety of drinks including Rebellion beer, produced locally in Marlow. They also serve food and The Bounty is a family friendly place with a large outdoor seating area next to the river which is great on a sunny summer afternoon. To keep children entertained there is also an outdoor play area. The place has a very homely feel to it and the friendly staff will be sure to look after you.

Four species of monkey are native to the forests of Costa Rica, the Central American Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri oerstedii), the White-headed Capuchin (Cebus capucinus), the Mantled Howler (Alouatta palliata) andGeoffroy's Spider Monkey (Ateles geoffroyi). All four species are classified scientifically as New World Monkeys. Two of the species, the Central American Squirrel Monkey and the White-headed Capuchin, belong to the family Cebidae, the family containing the squirrel monkeys and capuchins. The other two species belong to the family Atelidae, the family containing the howler monkeys, spider monkeys, woolly monkeys and muriquis. Each of the four species can be seen in national parks within Costa Rica, where viewing them in natural surroundings is a popular tourist attraction. The only park in which all four species can be seen is Corcovado National Park, on the Osa Peninsula.
White-Faced or Capuchin Monkey (below) is the species you are most likely to encounter closely in Costa Rica. They occur on the Caribbean slope’s wet forests as well as the Pacific side’s drier forest habitats. Capuchins are approx. 50 cm high and eat everything from flowers, fruit, bird-eggs, insects to the sandwich you brought to the beach. Their troop size is between 2 to 20, usually grouped around a single adult. Watch out when meeting these overactive primates: they are known to snatch anything edible or shining and are sometimes in an aggressive mood to defend their territory.
Capuchin monkeys are most common at the National Parks of Manuel Antonio, Corcovado and Santa Rosa.
Squirrel Monkey (below) is a tiny monkey (ca. 0.6 kg), best found in and around Manuel Antonio National Park. Their habitat are Pacific wet forests, where they feed on insects and small plants. Due to the reduction of lowland forest on the Pacific side “titi” monkeys are endangered. Squirrel monkeys primarily eat fruit and the occasional insect. Interestingly these fast moving monkeys do not use their tails for climbing, but as a balancing pole (similar to cats).
Howler Monkeys (above) are the largest monkey species, growing up to 1m and weighing around 5 kilograms. Their habitats are lowland wet evergreen forests. Howler monkeys got their names due to the deep rumbling growls they make in the early mornings to mark their presence and thereby, their territory. In some places (Tortuguero, Corcovado) this will be your wake-up call. Their noise carries for up to five kilometres and makes the loudest sound in the jungle. Despite of these sounds, howlers can move extremely quietly and slow: they rest 80% of the day. Often they might pass the canopy right over you without being noticed!
Finally, Spider Monkeys (below) can use their tails like a fifth hand with which they can support their entire body weight. Spider monkeys rarely leave their tree habitats, where they feed on leaves, nuts and fruit. They are known to communicate by gestures: by approach of a human they might climb to the end of a branch and shake it heartily to scare the intruder away. If this does not work, they can throw heavy branches at the unwanted guest.

Circles in the City.
In this series of Fine Art Prints, I decided to take a different approach in term of style and format to really challenge my creative muscles and to try and see the world in a very different way. All the images are taken using a 8mm fisheye lens which gives the photographer unique access to 180° field of vision, that results in its own set of creative possibilities but also some very real challenges. However it is these challenges that were an absolute joy to play around with and enable me to create a different perspective of London and New York that is seldom seen. During a trip to New York earlier in the year I had the chance to experiment with a creative technique called Tilt-Shift/ miniature faking. The effect was done in post-productions (rather than with an actual tilt-shift lens) but the miniature faking effect can still be powerful when used.....in this case I used an ipad app called Snapspeed that is so useful for editing and adding effects to photo's whilst travelling.
I love using this effect, especially if it means getting the chance to fly in a helicopter......
here are some useful tips for creating tilt-shift images

As a photographer I'm always trying to find creative ways to see the world and to capture it in an image. Recently I've been experimenting with a fisheye lens in major cities across the world and using photoshop to mash cityscapes together to create something 'a little different'. In this images I've taken images across London including the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, Nelson's Column, The National Gallery and The City of London and then stitched them into a single image. The idea was to mash up the old and the new in an 'impossible image' that takes a unique perspective on a city that I've not seen before
The fisheye lens was originally used for meteorology to study the sky and cloud formations, fisheye’s were originally called “whole-sky lenses.” These lenses quickly became popular in the general photography field because of their fun and unique uses, and of course their incredibly distorted lines. They can be used for many different purposes, both professional and for fun (but mostly for fun).....I will be exploring the potential uses for this lens in future blogs

Luminous Photography recently travelled to Costa Rica to photograph the local wildlife. The rich variety of birdlife was especially impressive and made a big change to what I usually see in Maidenhead, Berkshire
Although Costa Rica is a small country, it is in the bird-rich neotropical region and has a huge number of species for its area. 894 bird species have been recorded in the country (including Cocos Island), more than in all of the United States and Canada combined. Of those species, eight are endemic (five mainland species and three species found only on Cocos Island) and 19 are globally threatened. The Official List of the Asociación Ornitológica de Costa Rica contains 857 species. Over an area of 51,100 km2 this is the greatest density of bird species of any continental American country.

Contemporary family portraits produce some of the best and most popular images taken by Luminous Photography. My preferred method is for Lifestyle Portrait Photography that takes a more relaxed approach to portrait photography by utilising a home or an outdoor setting: an individual or family is placed in a less formal or familiar setting, which also helps to reveal more about the character, personality and life of the person or family.
To capture beautiful lifestyle portraits successfully, there are specific tips and techniques we need to follow. However the most important is to simply learn about the subject/s
Our lifestyle portrait planning begins with questions about the subject. We want to show more of his or her personality and life, so we must understand him or her better.
For example we may ask about
With that information, I have a realistic basis from which to choose a location for the portrait and what kind of picture to compose. Ideally I’d to spend time with the subject so he or she will become familiar with me and more confident about what I want to accomplish. This is why at Luminous Photography we do not put a time limit on our sessions as this process cannot be rushed and, in addition to this, we've usually had in depth conversations before the shoot commences
It’s not just that many people are uncomfortable in a photography studio, under the hot lights. It also divorces them from much of what makes them who they are. For example a portrait idea could be a well-planned, well-lit and carefully composed photo of a son playing his guitar or a daughter acting in a play. in my opinion this is a much more interesting image than of her in a professional photographers studio setting. She can be surrounded by instruments/ microphones and family/ friends, whilst playing a song to emphasise the passion or hobby even more.
Perhaps your daughter is a budding photographer; so instead of (or in addition to) a formal pose in a new dress in the garden, photograph her with a toy camera taking pictures of her sister with dramatic sunlight streaming through high windows creating interesting shadows.
Whatever location(s) we choose, it should be an extension of the subject, with a few interesting elements that help tell his or her story. The location must offer the right balance without dominating the portrait. In most cases, the location for the lifestyle portrait won’t be ready-made. You may have to do some arranging. For example, there may be a lack of interesting, supporting elements, so don’t hesitate to add props if they will help. You also want to eliminate background and/or foreground clutter and find subtle, neutral background.
If you like the sound of who we go about our beautiful lifestyle photography, then please don't hesitate to get in touch and we can start planning it today!
Thanks
Tom

Sloths are classified as folivores, as the bulk of their diets consist of buds, tender shoots, and leaves, mainly of Cecropia trees. Some two-toed sloths have been documented as eating insects, small reptiles, and birds as a small supplement to their diets. Linnaeus's two-toed sloth has recently been documented eating human faeces from open latrines. They have made extraordinary adaptations to an arboreal browsing lifestyle. Leaves, their main food source, provide very little energy or nutrients, and do not digest easily. Sloths, therefore, have large, specialised, slow-acting stomachs with multiple compartments in which symbiotic bacteria break down the tough leaves. Sloths' tongues have the unique ability to protrude from their mouths 10 to 12 inches, an ability that is useful for collecting leaves just out of reach. As much as two-thirds of a well-fed sloth's body weight consists of the contents of its stomach, and the digestive process can take a month or more to complete.
On one occasion, after waiting around for hours, I was lucky enough to capture a mother and baby up in the trees. It was such a touching sight as the mother is such a tender carer and it was amazing to share the moment
Since leaves provide little energy, sloths deal with this by a range of economy measures: they have very low metabolic rates (less than half of that expected for a mammal of their size), and maintain low body temperatures when active (30–34°C or 86–93°F), and still lower temperatures when resting.
Although unable to survive outside the tropical rainforests of South and Central America, within that environment sloths are outstandingly successful creatures. On Barro Colorado Island in Panama, sloths have been estimated to comprise 70% of the biomass of arboreal mammals.[5] Four of the six living species are presently rated "least concern"; the maned three-toed sloth (Bradypus torquatus), which inhabits Brazil's dwindling Atlantic Forest, is classified as "endangered", while the island-dwelling pygmy three-toed sloth (B. pygmaeus) is critically endangered.

On Friday night Luminous Photography was invited to enjoy and photograph a fantastic evening of Jazz at Norden Farm in Maidenhead. However, this was not just for the professionals as it was also School's Jazz Day where students from the local area came down for the afternoon to learn from and then perform alongside Simon Allen and other invited musicians. The students came from Cox Green School who, without exception, played with great talent and enthusiasm!

Luminous Photography was recently commissioned by a bride who wanted a more unique piece of art created from the wedding photo's I had already taken last year near Maidenhead. The concept I came up with was to take the bridal portrait images from the day and merge it with the some of the natural detail shots using a post production technique called double exposure or blending!
In this image I've mixed natural elements from the day, specifically flower petals from the brides bouquet. In doing so, it creates a beautiful depth that challenges ideas of reality and creates something truly special from her wedding that is unlike anything her friends have to commemorate their day. She was so pleased to have an image from the day that is less traditional and completely unique!
The image was so well received that I suggested the concept to another wedding clients. They loved the idea and we were able to produce the images below. I now offer this option to all new wedding clients but it should also work with anyone who is already married and has some fantastic digital images taken from the day (even if I was not the photographer) so if you are interested please don't hesitate to get in touch!

I am so pleased that ROSA have used one of my images from the Centrica Women's Network training event I covered a couple of weeks ago in Windsor. Their latest newsletter covers many events that are being undertaken to highlight International Womens Day 2014 - IWD was founded in 2001 as a non-profit philanthropic venture dedicated to keeping International Women’s Day (IWD) alive and growing.
It is still possible to donate to the Centrica Womens Network Arctic Challenge - you can find details here
Good luck and raise loads of money for a great cause

Luminous Photography - Event Photography Technique
After years of shooting events for many different clients around Maidenhead and beyond, you tend to get the feeling of how one should typically go. And just like other events such as weddings, concerts, presentations, launches, you learn the shots that are necessary, where you need to be at what time, etc. Throughout these events five key things have echoed through them all, but one can be the biggest core–stealth. Based on my experiences, here are five things needed to tell stories through your photos at events.
Do Your Research!
One thing I’ve learned is that you have to do your research to establish who are the main players at the event and photography them accordingly. Knowing your level of access can save you the trouble of having to deal with security is also very important. Not only do you not want to miss the key personalities, you also don’t want to get yourself kicked out of the venue and lose your commission....its essential to get as many unique and specific shots as possible.
Sam Laidlaw CEO of Centrica
Theresa May MP - UK Home Secretary
Its important to have establishing shots for the narrative of the event so its a great time to warm up. I'll even have my camera out and have a few shot taken before everyone arrives. this sorts out the settings I want to use so there is not fiddling too much at the event.
Be in the moment, don’t be a distraction. Covering an event, behind a camera, you are not supposed to be part of the event. You are observing the moment, recording it. Effectively you need to be invisible. By the time the event ends the attendees should be wondering if you were there at all. That is a lofty goal, but it is obtainable. The truth is going into an event you’ll need to be in the state of mind to blend in and move quietly. Yes, people will see you. They should not be distracted by you.
![]() ![]() ![]() |
Tell the Story of the EventLearn to tell the story of an event. There will be a beginning, these are the images where you set the scene. A middle and these are the images the shoe the people in involved and their purpose there. In the end you want to get the res of the people there, their retains to the event. Your images have to convey all this. If the event is about something in particular make sure you show it with the context of the environment and people involved. If your intended audience can’t see what the story or event is about you are doing it wrong. |

Luminous Photography was recently asked to turn up in a Windsor Park to photograph a Nordic skiing training session of the Centrica Women's Network who will be off to the Arctic in March to raise money for ROSA. Naturally I was curious, so who are the Centrica Womens Network.....
"We are a team of 25 women from the, from all levels of the business, and at all stages of our careers. Together we’ll be raising £25,000 for the Centrica Women’s Network nominated charity Rosa.
We will be doing this by taking part in the Centrica Women's Network Arctic Challenge. The Arctic Challenge is a unique opportunity provided by Centrica for a team of women to push ourselves beyond both our physical and mental comfort zones. The challenge takes place in March 2014. The location for this year’s challenge is the Norwegian Arctic Circle, in temperatures as low as minus thirty degrees Celsius.
Over five days we will have to tackle a number of physically demanding challenges including cross country Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, building snow shelters and a 60km dog sled. As you can see we have already started training for the challenge!
Money raised from this exciting venture will go to ROSA. Rosa is a charitable fund set up to support initiatives that benefit women and girls in the UK. Because, while many women and girls here do enjoy freedom of choice and the opportunity for success in their lives, that’s simply not true for all. Their vision is of equality and justice for all women and girls in the UK.
Women aren’t short of ideas to help create positive change in their lives, but they are often short of the money needed to turn those ideas into reality. That’s why Rosa was launched in 2008 – to help raise more money for women’s projects and organisations".

And the rain just keeps on coming.....I managed to get even more images of floods over Maidenhead and Cookham this morning from Cliveden House in Taplow. The water level in Windsor last night was also looking looking pretty high so the next few days are going to be very difficult for the region.
Good luck to all

Berkshire is suffering from floods yet again - I went out into the wind and rain this morning and headed over to Winter Hill in Cookham to get images that overlooked Maidenhead, Cookham, Bourne End. The volume of water effecting the region is staggering, and as you can see from the images below, its impossible to tell where the Thames ends and the land starts. Unfortunately the rain is forecast to continue over the next few days so best wishes to all those are already suffering and those who are yet to be affected!

I was very happy to read the Maidenhead Advertiser this week as they used one of my images in their article about Sir Nicholas Winton's film "Nicky's Family". I wrote a blog entry about this a few days ago where you can find more information about the film and images from the screening at Norden Farm

The at home baby shoot is a real life saver for many new parents as it means they can have the benefits of capturing their little bundle but none of the hassle of getting them out and to the studio in the few months of their life. Its a huge advantage to have everything you need at home, the surroundings are familiar and there is no stressful journey, no cold weather to contend with, no timing feeds and remembering everything you need.
The home photo shoot can make the whole process far more relaxing for everyone (baby, parent and, thankfully, photographer) and doesn't limit the ability to get some amazing shots of your 'little one'. As long as we can get some access to natural light (large window, conservatory door), and an enthusiastic parent to coax that winning smile then we can hopefully create images that you will treasure for a lifetime.
My thanks to baby Claudia and parents in Cookham (near Maidenhead) for a really good fun and successful photo shoot. You can find you gallery here

On Saturday evening Norden Farm screened Nicky's Family, a film based on the life of Maidenhead's Sir Nicholas Winton. The screening, attended by Sir Nicholas himself, was introduced by the Home Secretary Theresa May MP and Rabbi Jonathan Romain led a discussion at the end of the film.
Nicky's Family
Discover the inspirational true story of "Britain's Schindler" Sir Nicholas Winton in the award-winning film "Nicky's Family". An ordinary British stockbroker, Nicholas Winton organised the rescue of 669 Czech and Slovak children just before the outbreak of World War II. Winton, now 103 years old, did not speak about these events with anyone for more than half a century. His heroism would have probably been forgotten if his wife, fifty years later, hadn't found a suitcase in the attic, full of documents and transport plans. Today the story of this rescue is known around the world, and thousands of descendants of 'Nicky's Family' continue to follow in his footsteps to do good. "Nicky's Family" has earned rave reviews from audiences and critics around the world, winning over 29 awards - including 13 audience awards from U.S. film festivals!

Stowa are a German watch company that has been manufacturing high end time pieces since 1927. The model below is the 1938 Matt Chronograph which is based on a pocket watch from the 1930's that has a Valjox 7753 automatic movement with an intricately embossed dial and a simple, yet classic typography. It has been lovingly manufactured using materials such as bronze, silver and pink gold in a complex process that dates 80 years.
Photographing watches can be problematic due to the reflective nature of the expensive and precious materials used to create them. However, through a blend of creative techniques that takes advantage of clever lighting, exposure, sharpness I've hopefully be able to produce images that really show the watch off in it full glory.
This was such a fun shoot to work on but was also technically challenging in equal measure. However this is why I love photography and made it a true pleasure to work on, as it made me think about every little thing I was doing, and why I was doing it! You can see the whole galley of images here
Bring on the next one!

This blog will hopefully help you understand what to suggest people wear for their portrait. You’ll also learn why these suggestions really are in your best interest so we can get the most out of the shoot.
What the subjects are wearing in a portrait is just as important as all the other details such as: lighting, location, and posing. Poorly selected clothing can really take away from an otherwise really great portrait. The goals in helping your portrait subjects or clients select clothing are:
Poorly chosen clothing, or having no discussion about it at all, can result in just the opposite of all those things. NOT what you want to have happen!
I get asked for tips all the time. People “hear” funny things about what they should or shouldn’t wear for their portraits and show up in the strangest things that can really distract the eye and create less successful images. It is, of course your photo shoot so you can wear whatever you wish but if you like some suggestions then please keep reading:
This is what I recommend for what to wear to a portrait session (plus the reason why it can be a good idea)
wear solid coloured clothing - so that we see all of your faces and no one person stands out. If you wear stripes or flowers, you will stand out from the rest of your group.

Photographing kids can sometimes be a very tricky process but not with these two. Both girls were amazing and threw themselves into the session making my job so much easier and enabling us to capture some lovely natural images. To celebrate Christmas and moving into 2014, Luminous Photography is pleased to offer new customers the following introductory offer - you can view/ download it here.
We specialise in organic photography shoots for individuals/ couples and families. So ‘what is organic photography’ I hear you ask.....well, think of it like organic food that uses natural processes to create a product that is superior to a mass produced, chemically enhanced one. In the same way, we prefer the natural approach to photography and avoid the use of harsh lights in a studio environment that is ‘alien-to-most’. We achieve this by utilising daylight as much as possible, whilst the session takes place in the most comfortable and familiar surroundings, (i.e. usually in your home or a place of personal interest) as we believe this enables clients to relax and truly enjoy the experience which will in turn create more beautiful and honest images
If you are interested please get in touch here

We are proud to offer a wall art design consultation during the ordering session. Luminous Photography has invested in unique visualisation software that takes all the guesswork out of the process by showing you exactly what your images will look like on the walls of your home.
At the initial consultation, in addition to gaining a good understanding of what you want to achieve from your photo shoot, we will look at the wall space in your room/s to get an idea of where the images will best suit. We take a picture of the wall/s and superimpose the finished images from your session with us. These will be to scale and use a variety of frames and canvas formats to give you a very accurate impression of how they will look before you invest in the final pictures.
It is this commitment to complete client satisfaction that sets us apart from the crowd.
