Kids Portrait Photographer in Berkshire

As a professional photographer based in Berkshire, I'm often asked what is the hardest form of photography you are involved in? I've tried my hand at many styles ranging form food photography, wildlife photography to wedding photography and my honest answer would have to be trying to get natural, honest and relaxed photographs of kids!

I'm sure any parent out there has found the same issues - you want to catch the perfect moment when the kids are outside playing and laughing, the lighting is awesome and you see the perfect composition in you minds eye. However, as soon as the camera come out, the kids smiles stiffen up, they stop all the natural interaction and those expressions that you love in your kids disappear immediately

Professional Photographers suffer from exactly the same issues but there are tricks of the trade that can help. Firstly, consistency is key, so frequently getting you camera out so they are relaxed, engaged and don't turn stiff as a board will really help. Also have different shooting strategies depending on how old your kids are e.g. photographing 2-4 years olds is probably when children are at there most photogenic as they are unaware of what is happening and behave very naturally. Ages 5 and up is where they become more self conscious so you, as the photographer, have to work harder and be more patient - let them play so you can disappear into the background (a longer lens can really help here - I use a 70-200mm 2.8) so they forget all about the camera being on them

The most important factor is not experience or having the 'right kit' or 'latest lens' but to not give up! Always have a camera with you, keep shooting and the images will come. Its easy to get discouraged (and it happens to all of us) but when you do capture that one image that encapsulates your child, it will be worth all the hard work.
